Study trip to Scotland 2025
Our study trip to Scotland began on the 13th September 2025 at a truly ungodly time at Schwerin main station: 5:15 a.m.
Getting out of bed that early to catch our bus to Amsterdam was the greatest obstacle most of our group would face for the entire trip though, and Scotland definitely rewarded us for that sacrifice.
The tired lot of us got going anyway, and after around 7 hours of driving (mostly sleeping for our part), we arrived at Amsterdam where we checked in on our ferry to Newcastle, UK. We spent the night on the water after witnessing a fabulous sunset, and the morning greeted us with an evenly beautiful sunrise (and a very tasty breakfast buffet). Around 9 a.m. we arrived at Newcastle, got off the ferry and back into our bus and departed for Inverness – yet another 10 hours of bus ride, everyone! Now, of course this one was much different from the first, as we stopped at the Carter Bar border stone and in Jedburgh along the way. After a warm dinner at the Inverness Youth Hostel, some of our fellow students guided us through the city at night.
The next day, after breakfast at 7, our daily bus tour first led us to famous Loch Ness and further along many more Lochs to Glen Shiel, a beautiful yet also historic place in the Highlands. After visiting Eilean Donan Castle we drove along the coast of the Isle of Skye and arrived at Lealt Falls at 3 p.m., and nearly half or our group dared to bathe in the ice-cold water (typically around 10 °C) that flows directly into the sea. After our stay there, we returned to the Youth Hostel, once again traversing the north of Scotland along the Great Glen Fault.
On Tuesday, we visited the more sophisticated Cawdor Castle and nearby Fort George, then got to enjoy our free time touring Inverness (for example, being Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop, “Leakey’s bookshop” is worth a visit).
Wednesday morning brought about the end of our stay in Inverness. Before breakfast, we packed our luggage and soon after were on our way to Edinburgh. Along the journey we stopped at Glenfiddich Distillery (60-year-old whiskey for 120’000£, anyone?) and the Glenshee skiing area. In the evening, we arrived at the Edinburgh Youth Hostel, and after dinner, we enjoyed the view of Scotland’s capital at night from the top of Calton Hill.
The next day started with a guided city tour through Edinburgh which included the National Museum of Scotland (featuring Dolly the Sheep) and the Harry Potter Graveyard. After that, we paid Edinburgh Castle a visit and enjoyed the flawless weather in the city, ending the day with a merry evening in a karaoke club.
Friday led us to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of New Lanark, a historic textile factory complex founded by David Dale in the late 18th century. Back in Edinburgh, we enjoyed a fantastic evening that introduced us to some traditional Scottish dancing and was entertainment and workout in one.
The weekend marked the end of our study trip. On Saturday we packed our things and got on our way back to Newcastle, stopping at the famous Gretna Green village where one couple from our group got “married” the Scottish way, their eternal bond symbolically forged on the blacksmith’s anvil. We spent our last evening together on the ferry where we enjoyed a fancy dinner and ended our stay with a whole lot of dancing on the entertainment deck.
Sunday morning, we arrived at Amsterdam and in the evening, we were already back in Schwerin. In one week’s time, we had gotten to know Scotland in all its colours, from the Highlands to the Lochs to the cities, learned of its history and people. A fantastic experience we can definitely recommend! Alba gu bràth!
